Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Disembodied established itself as one of the heaviest bands in hardcore and one of the pioneers of hc/metal fusion during its career. Formed in 1995, the band’s first release would be “Existence in Suicide” on Furface Records. “The Confession” Disembodied’s follow-up 7”, would be published by Moo Cow Records. Shortly after, the band would join forces with Ferret Music , releasing a full-length, “Diablerie”, split with Brother’s Keeper “Oxymoron” and the CDEP “If God Only Knew The Rest Were Dead”. Prior to the band’s demise, Disembodied would record its final release, “Heretic” for Edison Recordings (Coalsece, Overcast). Fans of low-tuned guitars and almost sludgy metallic hardcore should check out Disembodied. Ex-members of the group formed now defunct Martyr AD and Devilinside. In 2008 Disembodied reformed and played for the first time in 9 years at Burning Fight Festival in Chicago in 2008.
Disembodied’s “Psalms of Sheol,” a collection of rare, out of print and unreleased material saw the light of day in August 2009 on Prime Directive Records. Thirteen songs from one of the heaviest, darkest and most innovative hardcore bands of the 90’s, re-mastered by the band to sound louder and heavier than ever. Includes the Confession 7”, Existence in Suicide MCD, compilation tracks, unreleased songs, and a cover of Metallica’s “Creeping Death.”
Disembodied played the 10 for $10 show in St. Paul, Minnesota on July 31, 2009 with Terror, Poison The Well, Bane, and more. They also headed to Europe in August 2009 for three shows including the Ieper Fest on August 30th. Disbanded again in the summer of 2011.

This band serves up huge plates of charred riffs with blackened baked vocals, plus stewed bass lines dipped primal rage – and to wash this all down they give you drum blasts filled with haterade! I will give you this advice: play this record loud as hell, but be warned, all of your neighbors will hate you and you might get evicted, but who cares, you did it in the name of killer music. DEAD IN THE DIRT are totally gnarly – every song on this 7 inch is hi-octane radness that makes you want to rip the face off of injustice. This band has something to prove, creating music that is full of manic energy and that has secret rooms of decaying melody. Both of the vocalists in this band are top fucking notch, so you better recognize. DEAD IN THE DIRT’s songs do not build, they start off ultra sick and stay that way until the end, and then the next song comes on, so the killer process repeats itself. When you hear “Bastards of the Bleak,” and the drums start hitting you in your heart, you say to yourself, this band means business, and to that I say, you are damn right. These dudes have no boundaries when it comes to taking genres then morphing them into their ugly/brutal likeness. With this band, you don’t know where the grindcore becomes d-beat, then shape shifts into black metal, who spits out blood mixed with hardcore/punk. It was 2005 when Ed Gein released their last album, Judas Goats and Dieseleaters. Birthed in Syracuse, NY in early 2001 and propelled into the hardcore spotlight by critical acclaim, a raucous live show and an appearance on the Hellfest 2003 DVD, the ball started rolling and the bad hit the ground running hard. From 2005-2007, the band were road warriors, terrorizing the music scene with their spazzy, metallic-grind, laced with punk sensibility and political and socially driven lyrical content. Their CD and vinyl sales were going strong. Their profile with the press was growing. The tour offers were rolling in and management/booking agents were taking note. Then everything just stopped. On the outside, everything seemed to be getting better. But behind the scenes, the band was stalked by bad luck. Their new record is appropriately titled Bad Luck as it summed up their life as a band. Robbed, beat up, lost, broken down, crashed, robbed again, broken down again and again.
No, Ed Gein did not break up. Just took a little break.

Sometimes you hear people talk about bands being "musician's musicians", which usually just means no one gives a shit about them except for dorks who are experienced with writing and performing music. Jet Black Summer were definitely one of those musician's musician bands. I definitely remember overhearing dudes I looked up to in my early teens raving about this band at their shows. While they experienced some success, I really feel like had they been given a better break, they would have released some absurdly great material. As you can tell by this release, they were certainly capable of doing so. There are some massive hooks on this thing. I really love this band and this album and would rather not have to crudely explain their sound, so I here is a sample; the song "Ether" from this album. I hope you find it interesting.

To be honest, I am pretty ashamed that it took me so long to revisit this record. Kid Kilowatt is Kurt Ballou of Converge, Steve Brodsky and Adam McGrath of Cave In, Aaron Stuart of Piebald and some other dude playing music in the vein of Sunny Day Real Estate and The Promise Ring with also a Jawbox-ish vibe at times. I'm sure you can imagine just how unique this album sounds, judging by its members. If you imagined "awesome", you imagined correctly. With some truly startlingly beautiful guitar work, I have a hard time trying to figure out why this album fell into obscurity. Hopefully it will gain a second life sometime soon.

The recent crust albums we've been getting in reminded me I forgot to post this gem a couple weeks ago when I first got it. "Far East Hardcore Punk" by Japan's ENSLAVE is by far one of the best crust records to come out so far this year. Good production, absolute shredding, melodic, catchy guitars, dueling vocals, and above all an original sound; this record has everything you'd hope for in a new crust album. Highly recommend.

Philly's Starkweather and France's Overmars have teamed up to release a split 12"LP. Overmars have released numerous recordings over the last few years (many of which have been reissued by the Crucial Blast label). Their brand of ominous, expansive musical darkness is breath taking. A bleak and barren mix of doom, metal tinged punk, and experimental hardcore. Bringing to mind the sonic damage of later era Swans and Neurosis, while harboring a contemporary heaviness unlike anything else out there today. Starkweather's legacy within aggressive music is legendary. Recorded at the same time as their highly praised "This Sheltering Night" album, their contributions here show a creative force at their most powerful. The complex "Armed Memory" shows Starkweather as tortured, jagged, and frantic as they've ever been. While their 14 minute epic closer "Nightmare Factory" is a layered metallic dirge of catastrophic proportions, dizzying and disorientating in its hypnotic ebb and flow. Together Overmars and Starkweather have created an unclassifiable, paranoid journey into the artistic abyss, proving that aggressive music still has much to offer. Lets face it, to say that as the years have gone on the whole Neurosis/Isis/ETC style of "post-metal" music has been aped by hundreds of bands and to say that particular subgenre of music has become stale would be beating a dead horse at this point. It seems like no matter how many bands put out records like this, they always seem to boil down to pale imitations of the real thing. Seraphim has not only dispelled this preconception, they have raised the bar. After releasing a promising demo and 3 song 7 inch, they have released their incredible 8 song LP and the time and effort they spent on crafting this masterpiece definitely shows. Crushing heavier sections blend seamlessly into hypnotic psychedelic guitar riffs and breathtaking acoustic passages. It helps that they are backed by an amazing recording as well. Seraphim were always a very promising band but this LP finds a band coming into their own and proving that their songwriting chops are not something to be taken lightly. Fans of the aforementioned bands and the genre of metal in general would be doing a great disservice to themsleves if they don't check out and ultimately pick up this record. It won't be long before Seraphim is mentioned alongside bands like Baroness, Kylesa, Torche as heavyweights in the forefront of metal. I cannot recommend this album enough.

Lose None - Ravaged Lands

Lose None is a Bay Area band that became pretty popular in the mid-2000s with the release of their LP, Warrior Blood, which while a great record in its own right was nothing incredibly new. However, if you heard the record or ever saw them live, you couldn't deny the immense potential they showed. When I heard about them recording a new album I had high hopes, but when given a chance to preview the material, I was completely floored; blown away. To this day I cannot believe how ridiculously heavy and raw this record is and how tastefully they have incorporated all of their heavy music influences into their style. Sadly, due to whatever obstacles the band and label were facing at the time, the record was never released. I sometimes wonder what the response would have been, being that it is a huge step up in writing and performance on their behalf. It would be a shame for this album to remain an unheard and obscure gem, so I hope that some of you will check it out and recommend it to some friends. I sincerely believe that this record would have been revered and greatly influential. With that being said, this post is exclusive to Behemoth Skin and I am proud to be the person sharing this with our visitors. Enjoy.

There is so much I can say about this album, from the amazing musicianship, to the recording quality, everything is as spot on as it could be. When I first got a hold of this album I was expecting some of what was done on their previous album Paranoid Delusions/Paradise Illusions, but I was gladly mistaken, for this album hits hard like Systems Overload era Integrity and Reign In Blood era Slayer mixed together in a beautiful and evil fusion. This album went far beyond my expectations of Pulling Teeth but then again the band has been doing that since the beginning. This album exemplifies everything that is good within the Holy Terror element of hardcore and then-some. I would highly recommend this record to fans of heavier/metallic hardcore but realistically in my opinion everyone should listen to this album since I feel that Pulling Teeth have outdone themselves with this release.
